Hospitaled

It is the nearest village to Eripol and includes only five houses, located in a plain raised among mountains and ravines.

It has two areas, one of them built around the church, as is traditional in this region. It has very few houses, with very few inhabitants, but all of them of great architectural interest. At the village entry we can find a half-finished building, the school. Started in 1936, the work never came to an end.
The Church of San Salvador dates from the XVIth and XVIIIth century.

Blacksmith’s History

The Smithy of Hospitaled has a curious history.

The Smithy of Hospitaled has a curious history. It is said that money was forged there during the Independence War against Napoleon. A French traitor to his country asked the blacksmith to strike the coins. The alloys and drawings were done in one of village wine vaults.
The forged coins were discovered in Barcelona and it is said that Napoleon, very angry, put a price on the forgers head. Then the Hospitaled blacksmith hurried up to hide the engraving moulds in a natural cave, with its access flanked by the roots of a gigantic tree, where they continued their activities until the end of the war, and never became uncovered.

1 ´5 km from Hospitaled it is located the small village of “La Coloma”, with a house, auxiliary agricultural buildings and a chapel.

Near Hospitaled we find the ruins of the medieval castle of Esplubiello.
Espubliello Castle

It is assumed that it could be built at the end of the Xth or in the beginning of the XIth century, as a defensive stage against the Muslims from the south, settled in Alquezar.

It is 2 km from Hospitaled and a couple of kilometers passed Bárcabo, the detour is well signposted. There is a signposted track that begins at the entry of the village, from the Cross of San Pedro and San Gregorio.
Placed on a foreland next to the San Chils Ravine, on the old road to Olsón, it is part of the defensive ring between the Arcusa plains and the River Vero middle area.

oon we will find the remains of a fortified medieval settlement that emerge among the weeds. It is a castle of rectangular plan, built in ashlar. It is possible to appreciate the base of two circular towers on both ends. Close to the castle we see the remains of the church, of rectangular nave with a loophole head.

In the same rock where the castle settles, there are several deposits carved in the rock and connected with small channels.

To approximately 100 m, in another small elevation, new links carved in the rock appear, protected for small walls of stone and remains of housing constructions, a medieval settlement, with small channels carved in the rock in order to lead rainwater to cisterns.
