At an altitude of more than 900 meters, Eripol is one of the highest and more isolated villages of the north area. It is ubicated in the hillside and is divided in two quarters: one around the church and the other further down, called Samper.
In this beautiful village remarkable elements can be found, as the paved streets, the use of the ashlar, the rough stone and the flagstone covering, or the “espantabrujas” in the buildings. In many roofs the original sandstone has been replaced with a more up-to-date Arab tile. Eripol preserve one of the best groups of chimneys of the Sobrarbe.
They preserve the tradicional agricultural and livestock countryside, with strips and bench-covers protected by walls of masonry, which welcome the visitor to a place where coexists the arboreal cultivation and the olive tree.
Near Eripol it is located the “Mesón de la Potenciana”. Nowadays it is a private house, in the route to Arcusa, but it is said that years ago it was used like roadside hotel, before the rural depopulation.
In the vicinity we find the “Pelegrín” cave, where, as the tradition tells, a carving of the Virgin appeared. It is engraved with some different decorative motifs of late chronology (it appears in 1474).
Church of Santa Eulalia
It is a work of the XVIth century, of popular character, built in masonry.
Built on the top of the village, the church surprises the visitor with two very striking aspects: its main and only way of access is situated on the tower, and the existence of a coat of arms, that is not usual to find in churches. It has an only rectangular nave with a straight head.
The square, sturdy tower, built onto the south side, has among its rooms that in which the taxes were guarded, known as the Tithes Room.
Also in the low part, there survives a cylindrical container used to gather the oil fruit from the payment of taxes.
We can take a break time by the church enjoying a beautiful scenery.
The chapel of San Hipólito
The chapel of San Hipólito dates from the XVIIth century.
It consists of a nave and rectangular domed apses, and a door to the south with round arch (in the stone arch is engraved the date of 1660). The pilgrimage to the Chapel of San Hipólito is very frequently visited, although most part of the Chapel is in ruins.
Cave of the Witches
It is located in Eripol and some prehistoric remains were found on it.
Peña de os Pacos
A large number of fossils belonging to the Cretaceous has been found there: bivalves, ostreas, sea urchins, crabs, conches, starfishes, etc. and even the human remains of a young child in an ancient grave under a millennial olive tree.
