Almazorre

Following the road to Arcusa, after passing the detours of Lecina and Hospitaled, we arrive to Almazorre, one of the most historic villages in the area.

The Almazorre village is divided in two areas: in the upper one we find the parish church, located in the highest point. In the lower one, to the feet of the mountain, are most of the housings and the public use buildings as the old schools, nowadays used as social facilities; we find too the smithy and the “Ermita de la Esperanza”, today’s parish church.

One of the most interesting buildings is in the upper area, a few meters away to the south of the San Esteban Temple, near the church. It is called the “esconjuradero”, a small building of quadrangular plant, in whose walls are opened vains faced to the four cardinal points. There magic spells would be launched to undo the thunderstorms. The false vault dome of the “esconjuradero” it is covered with sandstones perfectly arranged.
Next to the church lays the remains of the ancient abbot house.

Almazorre preserves the original design of its streets, a result of an organic and spontaneous town planning, usual in these small localities. There exist numerous housings that preserve the traditional architecture of the area, made of stone and flagstone roofs.

The small tower, approximately 5 m high, has a pentagonal plan. It is dated at about the middle of the XIth. Roughly 30 meters further to the east remain the ruins of a small church built later, at about the middle of the XIIth.
