Abrigos de Brafaluy

The Barfaluy complex is made up of three rock shelters decorated with paintings of the schematic style, the most abundant in this area.

These rock shelters are located on top of a rock stack.
The usual techniques here were the fingers painting and painting with thick lines of brush. The horns were painted with delicate lines done with feathers used as thin brushes. There is no trace in any of the paintings of any shading technique, not even hues that give volume to the figures.

These representations respond to a complex intellectual system full of symbologies.

The artist has painted these six goats seen from the side, but with both horns seen facing. This “crooked perspective” is a common characteristic to the whole prehistoric art. It corresponds to an intellectual, but not visual realism: the artist paints what he knows that exists, but he cannot see at the same time.
The figures are timeless, out of time and also out of space, since there is no reference to the environment; there are only symbols which meaning we miss.
It is a synthetic and symbolic art. The horns of the animals acquire an excessive development and the fingers of the human figures look like claws.
To the rock stack feet flows the “Barranco de la Choca”, tributary of the river Vero.
